September is national childhood obesity month

Posted on Sep 06, 2013 by Maggie LaBarbera

It is national Childhood Obesity Awareness Month.  Every September, this month recognizes the importance of prevention and early nutrition education.

It is a fact that 23 million children and teenagers in the US are obese or overweight.   But the concern is not specifically their weight but rather the associated diseases that children are predisposed to:

  • diabetes Type 2
  • heart disease
  • high blood pressure
  • high cholesterol
  • early signs of atherosclerosis

This month offers a great opportunity to talk with children about their health and what type of foods and exercise children need in order to feel great.

Here is a toolkit you can download.
