Posted on Mar 06, 2015 by Maggie LaBarbera

Breakfast is an important meal for children in particular because their body and brains are growing so rapidly.  If you think about it, the last meal or food they had is easily over 8 hours because of sleep.

But may you are not sure what constitutes a healthy breakfast?

We can look to the USDA school breakfast to give you a little guidance.  Here is what their standard is for a healthy breakfast for K-8th grade:

  • 1 cup of fruit
  • 1 oz equivelent of grains, make it whole grains
  • 1 cup of milk

This represents 3 food groups:  fruit, grains and dairy.  I would suggest adding a a small serving of protein to help your child's appetite.

You might also be wondering what to serve the kids?  Here are some more tips to help you get kids eating breakfast!  And remember, you can serve "out of the box", it does not have to be traditional breakfast foods to make a healthy meal for your child.
