Shout out to my mom for the values she imparted upon me

Posted on May 09, 2014 by Maggie LaBarbera

I just wanted to take a moment to send a shout out to my own mother and my  daughter who is now a mother.  With Mother's Day comes the reminder of all the things that moms do for us when we are young and when we are grown up!

I want to share one special thing that my mom did and does for me even today.  Growing up, we never ate boxed or canned food.  She always made everything fresh and cooked for us every day.  Family mealtime was a daily routine that I never really thought of as special.  I did not realize how much my mom concerned herself with ensure that we ate a well-balanced meal.  I took for granted that before she left to work in the morning, our lunches were made and our breakfast was cooked. Now, I realize that she instilled upon me through her actions and guidance, the importance of eating healthy and together as a family. I passed that along to my children because that was what I knew.

I see my daughter now making homemade baby food from organic fresh vegetables and fruits for her baby.  She has a strong sense of the importance of cooking your family meals and sitting together as a family.

My mom grew up without a mother (death during childbirth).  But in her mind, she had a sense of what a mother should do for her children. Now that is being passed down to the next generation.  People wonder why we have health and longevity in our genes.  Why my mom is late 80s and not on one medication. I truly believe it is because of the healthy meals and home cooked foods that we were raised on (a strong value passed down from our Inca culture)

The gift of family time and homemade healthy meals is priceless.  So thank you Mom for giving me a gift so special that it is being passed on generation to generation!

Nourish Thought for the Day:

A mothers love and guidance is key to a healthy, loving child that will be passed on generation to generation.
