Spaghetti and Meatballs

 
A family dinner that everyone will enjoy
 

Ingredients

 
  • Sauce:
  • Cooking spray
  • 1 cup finely chopped onion
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 (14 ounce) can chicken broth
  • 2 (28 ounce) cans whole peeled tomatoes, undrained and chopped
  • Meatballs:
  • ½ cup bread crumbs
  • 2 Italian sausage links, casings removed
  • ½ cup finely chopped onion
  • 1/3 cup chopped fresh basil
  • ¼ cup chopped fresh Italian parsley
  • 2 tablespoons egg substitute
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 pound ground sirloin
 

Directions

 
Adults: To prepare sauce, heat a large skillet over medium high heat.
Together: Coat pan with cooking spray. Add 1 cup onion and sauté for 3 minutes.
Together: Add 3 garlic gloves and sauté 1 minute.
Together: Add tomato paste and cook 1 minute.
Together: Stir in salt and broth. Cook 4 minutes.
Together: Stir in tomatoes, reduce heat and simmer for 45 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Adults: Preheat broiler.
Kids: To prepare meatballs; combine the breadcrumbs, sausage, onion and next 8 ingredients (through sirloin) in a bowl. With wet hands, shape sirloin mixture into 32 meatballs.
Together: Place meatballs on a broiler pan.
Adults: Broil 15 minutes or until done. Add meatballs to sauce and simmer 15 minutes.
Together: Sprinkle with 1/4 cup parsley and 1/3 cup basil.
Adults: Cook Spaghetti.
Kids: Serve Sauce over spaghetti. Sprinkle with cheese.
Adults: *Do you know how to properly drain pasta? Put a colander in the sink. Pour the pasta into the colander over the sink and drain. Don’t forget to use a pot holder to hang on to the pot.
