National Farm to School Month Brings Back Family Memories

Posted on Oct 06, 2014 by Maggie LaBarbera

I grew up in the city of San Francisco.  Needless to say, I did not have access to farms.  That was something I read about in my favorite storybooks.  Back in those days, (don't want to age myself) we did not have farmers markets.  However, if you took a half an hour drive any direction except west (that was the ocean!) you would run into farms.

This is before the Silicon Valley burst.  Going thirty to sixty minutes away seemed like another world.  All the beautiful green rolling hills, big barns and orchards.  These are good memories for me and these were family events!  It was a day event to go out of the city to some of the farms where my family would buy the fresh produce of the season.

I bring this up because this month is National Farm to School month.  And for the thousands and thousands of kids who don't live on or near farm communities, they may (like I did) not really realize where food actually comes from.  The grocery store is just one of the steps along the delivery chain to bring our food from farms to our table. (or school cafeteria).  It no longer is the only step.  Now, many schools have relationships with local growers and get some of their foods directly from them.

I think it is so important, especially these days with so much processed foods and fast foods dominating our culture to go back to the basics with kids.  Teach them where food really comes from.

Let's all celebrate fresh foods and our local farmers as part of the National Farm to School month.

Nourish Thought for the Day:

Give your local grower a special thanks for all their hard work providing  our schools with the healthiest and freshest foods.
