The Falling Food Game:
This is a timed game that uses the keyboard’s arrow keys to collect food from the correct groups to advance to the next level.
  • Students must catch enough falling food from the correct food group to fill up the status bar before the time runs out.
  • Catching a non-food item or a food from another food group will lose status bars.
At the start of each level, a word will be highlighted indicating what group is selected. In the very first level, the child will try to catch food and avoid non food items such as rocks. After the first level, foods from the selected group will fall along with food items that are not part of the highlighted food group. Using the keyboard arrows, the child will move the mini Food Pyramid across the screen (left to right and right to left) and try to catch the food only from the highlighted food group while avoiding food from the other food groups. When the correct food is caught, the status bar increases. When non-food and/or food from another group are caught, the status bar decreases. The child must fill up the status bar before the time runs out to move on to the next level.

Materials:
Computer and Internet access, the latest Flash and Shockwave players installed, download free from Adobe

Teaching Tips:
Have the student review the Interactive Food Pyramid or My Plate.

Procedure:
  1. Have the students come up with their favorite foods and write them on a board.
  2. Have the students separate the foods into the different food groups.
  3. Discuss any incorrect placements, explaining why that selection belongs it it’s specific group.
  4. Guide the students to Falling Food where they will see a variety of foods from different groups.

Assessment:
Present a food group and a number of different foods, most of which belong to the same food group, but some of which do not. Have the children identify what foods do not belong in that food group and place them in the proper group and explain their choices. Example:

Milk Cheese Yogurt Ice Cream Sorbet Cottage Cheese Pudding

Students should identify that sorbet, though like ice cream, is not part of the Milk Group because there is no milk in sorbet.
