Nutrient Machine Madness Lesson Plan:

Nutrition Machine Game 
The students will help Chef Solus to feed the correct foods to the “nutrient machine”.  This is a fun and creative way for students to understand the minerals and vitamins they eat every day.  Students will race against time (40 seconds) to get all the required food into the “nutrient machine”.  The  “nutrient machines” energy level increases each time you complete a list of foods.  If you don’t complete the list before the clock hits zero, the energy level decreases. If you fill all the energy levels, you win! 
 
Keyboard Commands For Nutrition Game:  
Mouse: To pick the food up into the machine, you have to put the mouse on the item and left click 
and hold. Then, drag the food to the machine’s mouth.    
 
Materials: 
Computer and Internet access, the latest Flash and Shockwave players installed, download free from 
Adobe.  
 
Teaching Tips: 
Review the food pyramid or the My Plate with your students to implement previous knowledge. 
 
Procedures:  
  1. Have students create lists of food items they think will give them the most energy.  This can be with partners or within small groups.  This will allow the students to become interested in the lesson. 
  2. Have the students record their discussions.
  3. Explain to your students why some items may give them more energy than others.  This will allow your students be curious of why certain foods give them more energy than others. 
  4. Use “Food Label Sample Sheets” for your students to see why one food item may give them more nutrients.  You can use 2 or 3 to help them compare and contrast the nutritional facts for certain foods they eat.  You can get more food labels samples in the food label printables section.
  5. Guide the students to “Nutrient Machine Game”. 
 
Assessments 
Present to your students many pictures of what they saw during the “Nutrition Machine Game”.  
Allow your students to create and choose the foods they think will give them the most nutrients. Allow the students to discuss why they chose one food over the other, even if it is the right or wrong choice.  This will allow the student to have inquiry during your assessment. 
 
For younger students, allow them to do the same assessment, but with a partner.  Your younger students will need more support during this portion and allowing them to have a partner they will develop more confidence in their abilities.
