Parent Information About Flavored Milk

Anne Kolker • MS, Registered Dietitian • Jul 14, 2012

There is opinions on both sides regarding flavored milk.

Flavored milk offers the same nutrients that milk does.  It is an excellent source of calcium and vitamin D.  Many studies have indicated that many children are deficient in both these nutrients.

flavored milk facts and kids

Flavored milk can be purchased in low fat, 1% and fat-free versions.  Some of the flavors available include chocolate, strawberry, vanilla and banana.

The controversy is the added sugar that is found in flavored milk.  The added sugar means increased calories that children don't need.

Some flavored milk advocates have argued that without flavored milk, many children won't drink milk and therefore, will not get the nutrients they need.  But there has not been any studies that prove that theory.

Kids need calcium and vitamin D.  Plain 1% fat or fat free milk is better than giving them sugary flavored milk.  New no added sugar flavored milk is now available.  They may have artificial sugar added, so please check the label.
