Keeping kids healthy at college

It is that time, the beginning of August and many families across America are sending their child off to college for the first time or maybe back to college to continue their studies.

Either way, you want your child to be healthy while away at school.  One of the key ingredients to being healthy is eating healthy.  There is truth the saying "you are what you eat!"  

Using the my plate guidelines can be a simple way for your college kids to stay on a healthier track.   Help them remember these 4 simple rules to a healthier meal:

  • Make half your plate fruits and vegetables
  • Choose grains higher in fiber like brown rice instead of white rice, whole wheat instead of white bread. Only 1/4 of the plate should have grains.  Most of use eat too much starchy foods.
  • Choose lean protein, only 1/4 of the plate should have protein.  Most of eat too much protein.
  • Drink or eat lowfat or nonfat dairy products.
