November is American Diabetes Month

It's National Diabetes Month- Learn diabetes facts,  find resources and tips for parents to help children eat healthier, be active and reduce the risks for diabetes. Taking steps to healthy lifestyle changes teaches kids important skills and habits and can help the whole family be healthier!

What can you do?
As a parent make sure you are taking care of yourself,  this is much like the saying that, ' a parent on an airplane must first put on their emergency gear to be able to care for their child.'
  • Consult with your primary care about your overall health, activity level and blood sugar levels.
  • Talk to your child's pediatrician about your child's health, BMI, and risk factors for diabetes
  • If nutrition, planning balanced meals or your child's nutrition is a concern or an obstacle consider a consult with a registered dietitian.
  • Try going Meatless with your family every Monday- Meatless Monday has great tips and recipes

Important Diabetes Facts and Resources :

"With nearly 26 million children and adults in American living with diabetes, and another 79 million at high risk for developing type 2 diabetes, the disease is taking a devastating physical, emotional and financial toll.

Recent numbers by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention paint a desperate situation of where we are at, and where we are headed:

  • Every 17 seconds, someone is diagnosed with diabetes.
  • Diabetes kills more people each year than breast cancer and AIDS combined.
  • Recent estimates project that as many as 1 in 3 American adults will have diabetes in 2050 unless we take steps to Stop Diabetes.
In addition, beginning November 1, the public can take action by taking the American Diabetes Month pledge on Facebook.

"Research trials have shown that type 2 diabetes can be prevented or delayed in people at high risk for the disease who make lifestyle changes. Weight loss of 5 to 7 percent (about 10 to 14 pounds for a 200-pound person)

Increasing physical activity to 150 minutes per week can reduce or delay the development of type 2 diabetes by nearly 60 percent.
