Calories on menus just around the corner designed to fight obesity

Posted on Mar 30, 2011 by Maggie LaBarbera

Your restaurant experience may be changing as the US Food and Drug Adminstariton will be requiring restaurants to list the calories on their menu.  This part of a strategy to fight childhood and adult obesity.

It has been pretty well documented that we underestimate the calories we are eating.  By giving consumers this information, the hope is that parents will make better decisions.  This can make a significant difference since most Americans eat 1/3 of their meals outside the home.

The proposal is expected to affect about 280,000 restaurants across America.

However, listing calories from soda and alcoholic beverages will not be required.  Which seems odd since we know that soda represents a lot of calories!

Maybe you agree, maybe you don't but you can't argue that the portions of food have changed over the years and many of us don't realize just how many calories we are really consuming.  This is a great way to use the eating out experience as another way to help teach kids to make healthier choices.

Kids do not ever need 1000 calories in one meal but you might be very surprised how many meals are close to that amount or more than that amount.

We know that eating out can be a memorable fun family experience.  Hopefully, this added information of menu labeling will help all of make healthier, more informed choices.
