Brain food for kids - national school breakfast week

Posted on Mar 07, 2011 by Maggie LaBarbera

It is the beginning of national school breakfast week.  This is a perfect week to get kids in the habit of eating a healthy breakfast each morning.  Why is this so important?

The answer is pretty simple.  It is the most important meal of the day for a child and can really make a difference in their mood, learning ability and overall performance in school.

Because kids are growing, they are actively burning up fuel while they sleep.  When kids skip breakfast, they can be going as long as eighteen hours without food.  Their body and mind will feel the effects of not having enough food on board.  And the effects can affect their performance in school.

Did you know that recent studies show:

Kids who regularly eat breakfast:

  • Generally have higher math grades
  • Are less depressed, anxious and hyperactive
  • Are more likely to attend class
  • Are more likely to be on time for class
  • Helps their ability to learn
  • Have a longer attention span
  • Are less likely to be overweight
