About Maggie

I am a nurse and a mother of 2. I am also the founder of Nourish Interactive. I am very concerned about the health and well being of our children. I started the Nourishing Thoughts Blog so that I could help parents keep up on the latest trends in children's nutrition and exercise.

I know that much like reading and writing is the foundation for learning, nutrition is the foundation for healthy children. But with so many new studies, products and trends constantly being reported it is hard to keep up. I just want to make it a little easier for parents by doing some of the legwork and providing you with up to date information.

Children’s nutrition- eating healthy foods helps children to improve their grades!

Sometimes we get too focused on childhood obesity and we may end up sending the wrong message. Parents whose child(ren) are not overweight may think that the message about healthy eating, the importance of daily exercise and a balanced meal are not meant for their child.

Well that could not be further from the truth. Yes, it is true that the childhood obesity epidemic is causing government, health officials and schools to take notice and implement strategies to address it.

But more and more studies are finding that over 80% of our children do not eat a balanced healthy diet. Not getting the necessary nutrients can affect how well your child does in school. And this regardless of weight.

Recent studies have shown healthy eating can positively affect your child’s:

  • academic achievement
  • brain development
  • school attendance
  • punctuality

Key to healthy eating:

  • balanced meal with foods from all the food groups
  • eating breakfast every morning
  • eating a healthy lunch
  • eating five or more servings of fruits and vegetables daily
  • daily fun exercise/activity

These are the essentials that all children need. Start making changes in your child’s habit/routine. Remember, these changes add up. Help your child develop healthy habits one change at a time.

I do not have kids of my own but I know when I was growing up and I was in school the teachers always told us to eat something for breakfast. ” Don’t skip breakfast they said because your brain don’t work as well.” I always thought they was kidding but I found out that it was true even in my adult years I can tell a big difference when I eat breakfast.
