Protecting your child's identity online infographics

Posted on Sep 09, 2015 by Maggie LaBarbera

COPPA compliance was established to protect children.  This is one of the biggest concerns with children going online.  How do you keep their identity safe.  Well it starts with controlling what websites your child goes to.

There are apps you can get for free or for a paid subscription that will help you control what websites your child is going to.  It is not that you don't trust your child, but they are often naive to what can happen online.  Children don't realize how their identity can be so readily found out if they enter in some information about themselves.  They don't realize that some website may be selling their names and information to marketers or third parties to use.  They don't realize that they need to protect their identity.

For children who are under 13, always look for websites that state they are COPPA compliant.  IF they don't say that they are, chances are they are not.  By law, if a website is asking your child for information, they must be COPPA complaint.  There are some ways that a child may be on a site that is designed for older children and will therefore not be required to meet the COPPA compliance standards.

Also advertising is not necessarily part of COPPA compliance.  So be aware of the sites advertising policy for your child.

We found this infographic that we thought might be useful in highlighting some concerns about children and their identity online.

We are mindful of protecting your child, so you can rest assured that when your child is playing on Solusville, they will learn about healthy food choices but they will not be advertised to.  We will not be asking them for personal information and we will protect any information we have and never sell or give it to a third party.  We only have it to create their unique login membership.
