Time to go to the Farmers Market - Family Event

Posted on May 21, 2014 by Maggie LaBarbera

Have you gone to a farmers market lately.  I was just thinking to myself that it has been awhile since I have gone.  With the beautiful weather and summer just upon us, it reminds me that some of my favorite fruits will be in season.

Farmer's markets are popping up all over.  This is a great way to get fruits and vegetables that are in season, fresh, healthy and support your local community.

The farmers' market provide a fun opportunity for kids to learn about healthy, nutritious foods.  Farmers markets can:

Help children learn where food comes from.  Some farms even have "picking days'' where kids can pick the produce right off the tree or vine!

Get fruit and vegetables and nuts in season.  They taste the best when they are fresh and a perfect time to get children to try a new food.

Let children participate in the buying process.  Farmers markets are family events and the farmers are usually happy to talk with children about the foods they are growing.

Farmer's market can teach all of us about tips on how to pick foods for the best taste.  Encourage children to ask local farmers some questions.

A day at the farmer's market is a family event.  A wonderful way to spend quality family time while learning about healthy foods.

Farmer's markets are fun!  They often have music and a few other locally made foods and crafts at farmer's market.

Find a farmer's market near you.

See our seasonal produce guide!

Nourish Thought for the Day:

Teach children where food comes from is a great way to teach them about fresh, nutritious foods. Processed food does not come from a farm!
